Kathak is the classical dance of North India, and its name comes from katha, a story. It is the core of what Ayantika teaches. Students learn tatkar (footwork), hastak (hand positions), chakkar (spins) and bhav (expression), in time with the taal. It suits children who like structure and adults who want a steady, focused practice.

Semi-classical dance takes Kathak's posture, hand positions and expression and sets them to songs. It is gentler for a beginner than full classical technique and still teaches discipline. It suits children who enjoy performing with friends, and adults who want classical grace without starting from formal technique.

Ayantika Academy is a dance academy in New Minal Residency, Bhopal, founded by Kathak teacher Rekha Sharma. Kathak is at the core, with semi-classical and Bollywood taught alongside it. Children and women both learn here, and students take the stage at Kala Sangam.

What to wear: comfortable clothes you can move in, such as a kurta with leggings or a salwar kurta, and a dupatta if you have one. Ask us on WhatsApp what to bring, and we'll tell you if and when you need ghungroo.

Four abilities grow together in Kathak, and each gets easier as the others improve. Along the way students build posture, focus, memory for sequences and the confidence to perform.
Footwork in exact time with the taal. The flat of the foot strikes the floor in set patterns, and once ghungroos are on, every step becomes a sound you can count.
Hand and arm positions that give each movement a clean line. They also carry meaning, showing a flower, a flute or a doorway as the story needs.
Spins on the heel with the eyes fixed on one point, so the dancer stays steady. Speed is added only after the balance is there.
Expression (abhinaya) through the face and eyes. In a single piece, one dancer can become Radha, Krishna and the Yamuna, changing character with a look.

Teentaal is the sixteen-beat cycle most Kathak students learn first. Its beats fall into four groups of four. Beat one is sam, where phrases land. Beats nine to twelve are khali, the empty section: the bols turn to tin and ta, and the bass drops away.
The syllables on the circle, dha dhin dhin dha, are bols: the rhythm as dancers say it aloud. Press play, watch the bell travel the circle, then try something every Kathak learner practises early on: tap on sam, every cycle.

Kala Sangam, a meeting of the arts, is the stage event where academy students perform for family, friends and the city. Kala Sangam 2026 opened with a Ganesh Vandana, followed by group dances and solos by children of around five to twelve. Women took part in ramp and talent rounds, and performers received awards on stage.
Kala Sangam 2027 is a celebration of women's talent and creativity in Bhopal. The date will be announced soon. If you'd like to take part, register your interest and we'll contact you when details are out.
